Here are some important protest dates that we may plan our own events around:
January 25th - Fluoride Awareness Day
- This is the day they started fluoridating Grand Rapids. It also happens to coincide with the beginning of the Arab Spring.
February 25th - NSA Awareness Day
- Started by a group of Cleveland State students this year.
March 8th - International Woman's Strike
March 15th - International Day Against Police Brutality
April 17th - International Day of Farmer's Struggle
May 1st - May Day: International Worker's Day
- This is a big union movement, so it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
Memorial Day Weekend - March Against Monsanto
October 11th - The Global Frackdown
- Started in 2012, this is a fastly growing group that is very grassroots based...love it!
October 19th - International Media Democracy Day
November 5th - Move Your Money Day
Black Friday - Walmart Protests
Other important dates:
G8 Summit - June 4-5, Russia
G20 Summit - November 15-16, Brisbane
WTO General Council meetings:
May 12-13
July 24-25
October 7-8
December 10-12
- By the way, the WTO is proud of the fact that they've reinvigorated the Doha Round discussions this past December. If you're not aware, it was protest against the WTO that led to the Battle in Seattle in the late 90's. We're at the same point now, where free trade negotiations are being hammered out from all sides. The TPP and such other free trade agreements is what they are meeting about and they meet several times a month. They don't list the locations for most of their meetings online, so you have to keep an eye out on the activists networks to get an idea if they'll be close to you. I doubt that they will be coming to our area, but we can use these days as awareness campaigns locally.
Local Actions:
~ January 20th - Civic Engagement Day
- Only issue with this day is that it is organized by MIRA, which has a few monied interests. It is organized around the opening day of the legislative session.
October 15th - Occupy Jackson's Anniversary
I know there are more out there, but these are the ones that stick out to me...let's see if we can pick out the ones that we like and roll with it.
